The 2027 Canada Games’ sustainability strategy guides our actions before, during, and after the Games to create an environmentally responsible event aligned with our values.
One of the three pillars of this strategy focuses on resource optimization and waste management, which is detailed as follows:
- Plastic reduction: Reduce the use of plastic and promote sustainable alternatives.
- Waste reduction: Implement effective waste reduction strategies.
- Circular economy: Manage resources and waste in a way that keeps them in circulation for as long as possible.
Our Concrete Actions for Sustainable Games
Given the scale of this event, the risk of environmental impact is high, but there are numerous opportunities to reduce waste. Here are a few that will be implemented across our various venues.
- Reduction at the source: Our goal is to increase the waste diversion rate by 35% compared to the Games’ 2025 edition. To achieve this, we prioritize reduction at the source by renting instead of buying new.
- Reducing plastic: We don’t distribute water bottles at our venues. We prioritize returnable containers and encourage participants to use reusable water bottles at the available water stations.
- Waste reduction: Waste reduction is everyone’s responsibility! When it comes to food, we prioritize reusable tableware and buffet-style food services at the Athletes’ Village to reduce waste and excessive packaging. Finally, we also aim to limit promotional giveaways and inspire our partners to do the same!
Waste Management at Our Sites: Refundable Containers, Composting, Recycling, and General Waste
- To ensure effective waste management and meet its sustainable development goals, the host society will implement a four-stream sorting system at its sites whenever possible, consisting of refundable containers, composting, recycling, and general waste. What can you actually put in the blue bin? Test your recycling knowledge here!
- Did you know that the list of refundable containers has been expanded? All containers ranging from 100 ml to 2 L are now refundable, including plastic milk and juice bottles. At the 2027 Canada Games, we are collecting refundable containers at our venues: for more details on the expanded deposit program, visit ConsignAction.
