The 2027 Canada Games will take place in an exceptional setting. On June 5, 2026, UNESCO officially designated the Québec City metropolitan area and Wendake as a biosphere region, an international recognition highlighting the territory’s commitment to sustainable development that balances environmental, social, cultural, and economic considerations.
This designation is historic. It marks the first time that an entire city has received this UNESCO status. It demonstrates the leadership of the City of Québec in implementing initiatives that promote a more sustainable future, while protecting its natural heritage and improving the quality of life of its residents. As the 2027 Canada Games approach, we are especially proud to host this event in a city that shares our values.
Sport has the power to bring people together, inspire, and generate positive impacts for communities. We hope that our event will also contribute to leaving a lasting legacy. With this vision in mind, the 2027 Canada Games Host Society is pursuing its own Biosphere certification process. This initiative reflects our commitment to integrating sustainable development principles into every decision we make, reducing the event’s environmental footprint, and maximizing its social, economic, and cultural benefits.
By welcoming the country’s top young athletes to a region recognized worldwide for its commitment to sustainable development, we aim to help advance a shared vision: a more responsible, inclusive, and sustainable future for generations to come.
