The 2027 Games in Biosphere Mode!

January 21, 2026

Building on the Canada Games Council’s Sustainable Development Strategy, the 2027 Canada Games Host Society is committed to organizing exemplary Winter Games from environmental, social, and economic perspectives.

Our process to obtain international Biosphere certification reflects this commitment: integrating the world’s best‑recognized practices and making a tangible contribution to the sustainable transition of the Québec region.

An ambitious, action‑driven approach
Our approach is grounded in environmental awareness applied to every phase of planning, operations, and delivery of the Games.

Concretely, we are implementing measures that will have a measurable impact on our collective footprint, including:

  • Selecting venues that reduce travel and transportation‑related emissions;
  • Reducing single‑use plastics;
  • Implementing energy‑saving measures, such as installing LED lighting;
  • Establishing circular‑economy practices, including donating unused food.

These actions are supported by a responsible procurement guide to frame our purchasing decisions, as well as excavation work to decrease the amount of snow required for sliding sports—an initiative that directly reduces water and energy consumption.

In collaboration with local businesses, we aim to leave the Capitale‑Nationale region with a sustainable, measurable, and inspiring legacy that benefits athletes, visitors, and future generations.
